Underwater!
Written By: Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla Recorded: June 1999
Lyrics

you were my army and i would command
attack the holy land
and you were that interstate
that i would roll my tanks down
and color my stunned

and wake the children when i'm done
and put the details in a jar
and bury them underwater

i came to see these battlegrounds (lost battle sounds)
and drove to the outskirts
with cars on blocks and houses run down

and color my stunned
and wake the children when i'm done
and put the details in a jar
and bury them underwater

we'll gather up the family now
display our diseased organs
we'll call it pride; we'll celebrate tonight
tax-free and always under priced

and color my stunned
and wake the children when i'm done
and put the details in a jar
and bury them underwater

Notes

This song falls in the strange category of being both an ATQ song and a Death Cab
original.  When Death Cab plays it, it isn't considered a cover, yet it was first released
on 'The Envelope Sessions.'  I like to think that the rough version that was released
originally was going to be the last rendition of the song, but Death Cab started
playing it live and the full band added so much to the song that Ben decided it was
worthy of being Death Cab material and eventually released it on a 7"  The time between the
recording of The Envelope Sessions and the Sub Pop 7" was probably only 6 months or less
and Death Cab was playing it live as early as October 1999.
